Workshop: The Craft and Poetry of Contemporary Mask

This workshop is offered to anyone curious about contemporary mask play and creation.

The mask is a powerful theatrical tool and it demands total physical transformation of the performer to come to life. The workshop presents a language of movement that supports a poetic approach to bringing masks to life on stage.

Our focus moves from physical awareness through simple improvisation and play to the dynamics of mime, articulation and the vocal mask. We will explore the silent stories of larval masks, the drama of expressive full masks and the human comedy of half-masks.

Students will also create an expressive full mask of their own. We begin through studying the forms and dynamic the human face, then we translate those physical dynamics of character to a clay model and finally a finished paper mache mask.
